A stump grinder is a powerful machine designed to remove tree stumps from the ground. After a tree has been cut down or has fallen, its stump remains in the soil, often presenting a tripping hazard, an obstacle, or an eyesore. Stump grinders are designed to eliminate these stumps by grinding them down into wood chips or mulch.

Why Use a Stump Grinder?

The main benefit of using a stump grinder is complete stump removal, eliminating tripping hazards, obstacles for construction or landscaping, and potential regrowth of new shoots. It also provides a clean and level ground, allowing for alternative use of the area.

How to Use a Stump Grinder:

The use and process of stump grinding varies according to the job, but in general, this is the process:

  1. Stump Removal: Stump grinders are used to completely remove the visible portion of a tree stump. DK2’s OPG777 stump grinder is powered by a KOHLER® Command PRO® CH440 14 HP 429 cc engine and can conquer any diameter stump up to 12” above and 9” below ground.
  2. Preparatory Steps: Before using a stump grinder, you must prepare the area. Remove rocks, debris, and any objects around the stump that could damage the machine during operation.
  3. Positioning the stump grinder: Position the stump grinder near the stump, taking care to ensure stability and balance. The grinder should be adjusted to the appropriate height to effectively reach the stump, keep in mind that the engine has an auto shut-off mechanism if the grinder is tipped too far - this feature prolongs the life of your KOHLER® engine by ensuring it has sufficient access to its oil reservoir.
  4. Grinding Process: Once properly positioned, turn on the stump grinder and lower onto the stump. Move the stump grinder back and forth over the stump, gradually grinding it down. The grinder's teeth chew through the wood, reducing it to small wood chips or mulch.
  5. Depth and Root Grinding: Stump grinders grind the stump to varying depths, too. The OPG777 stump grinder grinds up to 9” below ground. This is useful if the stump needs to be removed completely, including the roots. You may need to reposition the grinder to access different angles and areas of the stump.

Clean Up After Stump Grinding

As the grinding progresses, the wood chips or mulch accumulate around the stump. These can be left on-site as natural ground cover or collected and used for other purposes, such as landscaping or mulching. Once the stump has been ground down to the desired level, turn off the machine and inspect the area. Remaining debris or protruding roots may need further attention or removal.
